1. General Instructions - Please Read Carefully

   1.  Descriptions of all School of Education awards are listed; however, not all awards are available to us every year. If award is unavailable in a specific year, it will be listed as “unavailable”.

   2.  Some awards are reserved for 16-month and 2-year second year students; some awards are available to all students; the Wendy Seaman Memorial Scholarship is available only for entering students.

   3.  Integrated BSc/B.Ed. students may apply for School of Education scholarships beginning in their 4th year of studies.

   4.  Applications must be forwarded electronically by the deadline specified on the application form(s). We encourage you to apply early to assist us in processing.

   5.  Submit 1 complete Word file for each award to which you are applying . For both your email and the application files, please use the subject: surname, first name - name of award (e.g. Jones, Sarah - Strain Bursary). An application containing more than one file will be returned to the applicant for editing.

   6.  If you have questions, contact the Administrative Assistant to the Scholarship Committee.

   7.  The Office of Advancement will contact students to request a written letter of thanks for the award donors, where possible.

    

   The application process for School of Education Scholarships and Bursaries involves the following steps:

   1.  Students fully and completely provide the information requested on the scholarship application form(s).

   2.  A committee of School of Education faculty members reviews all applications independently.

   3.  The committee meets as a group. Applications are carefully ranked according to the criteria noted on the award citation(s). The strength of applications varies from year to year as does the sheer number of applications received.

   4.  Notification to Applicants: The University Financial Aid Officer will notify fall term award recipients in October and winter term award recipients in mid-January.

   5.  Once all award recipients are notified, the Administrative Assistant will send a general e-mail announcement to this effect.

1. Apply only if you are eligible.   It is important to read the description of each award carefully.  Some awards are available only to year 2 and 16 month B.Ed. students; one award is for year one students only. 
2. Include a completed application cover page and indicate your full student ID number.  Clearly state your program:  Year 1, 2, or 16-month.
3. Read and follow all instructions on the School of Education website.  Submit Word documents only – no .pdf documents are accepted.
4. Include a well-composed letter that addresses the criteria for the specific award. If you are applying for more than one award, change your cover letter to discuss your strengths for each award you are applying for. For example: if the award is for campus and community involvement, be sure to talk about your achievements and goals in these areas.
5. Check spelling, grammar, and sentence structure.  Ask a classmate or friend to proofread your cover letter. 
6. Be aware of and meet the application deadline.
7. Make sure you're proud of and satisfied with your application submission.
8. Several awards recognize students with financial need. Be sure to clearly answer the financial questions and provide clear totals. Your information is treated as strictly confidential. Applicants for financial need awards are expected to have explored all other possible sources of financial assistance including the government student loan program.

Awarded annually to a second year B.Ed. student who has demonstrated an interest in adding to the quality of life of others through campus or community activities and who has a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students from Nova Scotia. The scholarship is made possible through the generosity of the Provincial Chapter of Nova Scotia IODE in memory of Annie G. Murray, a 1911 Acadia Ladies' Seminary graduate.  Miss Murray was a dedicated teacher, a member of the IODE, and was involved in many community activities.

Eligible to apply: 16-month, 1st year, and 2nd year B.Ed. students

Award for 2023-24: $1965.50      Application Form

Awarded annually to a superior student who aspires to a career in special education.  The scholarship was established in memory of Charlotte Burditt Sutherland (BA Acadia, 1961; B.Ed., 1962) who, by her involvement with Acadia University and her concern for people, showed a lifetime commitment to disadvantaged members of society. Preference will be given to a student with financial need.

Two Awards for 2023-24: $5195 approx. each    Application Form

Two awards to students in the Bachelor of Education program at Acadia University who exhibit financial need. Preference will be given to students from Nova Scotia.

The endowed bursary was established in 2007 by The John and Judy Bragg Family Foundation, in consultation with the Craig Family, to honour Evan Douglas Craig (BA Acadia 1947; BEd Acadia 1948; MA Acadia 1949), an Acadia University graduate who had a positive impact on John Bragg as a teacher and principal at Oxford High School.

Ten awards for 2023-24 Value $8464.00              Application Form

Awarded annually to a student entering or returning to complete a Bachelor of Education degree. Along with financial need, the recipient must demonstrate qualities of leadership and/or have added to the quality of life of others through campus or community activities. Preference will be given to a student from Nova Scotia. The award is on recommendation of the School of Education. The Bursary is made available through the kindness and generosity of Mrs. Pauline Spence and in memory of the late W. Merle Spence.  Mrs. Spence was a graduate of Acadia University in 1949 (BSH) and had a long and distinguished teaching career in Nova Scotia.

Eligible to apply: 16-month, 1st year, and 2nd year B.Ed. students

Value for 2023-24:  $1110.00      Application Form

Awarded each year in memory of a woman of vision whose family enjoyed her support for post-secondary education and whose original plan was to teach children.  It extends the family's support for Acadia beyond the third generation.  It is available to a student with demonstrated financial need who is in the Bachelor of Education program (year one or year two).

Eligible: 16-month and 2nd year B.Ed. students

Value for 2023-24: $1703.00

This scholarship was established by his wife, Sarah Isabel MacWalker MacKenzie (Acadia '40) and his children.  It is awarded on recommendation of the Faculty of the School of Education to a superior student entering year two of the Bachelor of Education program.  Mr. MacKenzie (BA, MA, Acadia '37, '40; Prof. Dipl., Educ. Adm., T.C. Columbia U. '48) was Governor General's medalist in 1937 and did postgraduate work at Yale and Columbia.  He dedicated his life to teaching and educational administration.

Value for 2023-24: $3260.00.00      Application Form

Awarded to a student in the second year of the Bachelor of Education program who demonstrates some of the qualities Glenda and Marty Graham demonstrated as teachers. The recipient will be a person in need of financial assistance who shows dedication, perseverance, intelligence and compassion in their chosen field.

Eligible to apply: 16-month, 1st year, and 2nd year B.Ed. students

Value for 2023-24: $500.00      Application Form

Provided annually to a student pursuing a Bachelor of Education degree. Preference will be given to a student from the Springhill/Cumberland Country area with demonstrated financial need. The recipient will be chosen on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Education.

The award has been established to honour Jean Swift (DSS, Acadia, 1944) who pursued a career in educating others, by her sons David and Bruce (BSc, CAS, Acadia, 1978) Tuck.

Eligible: 16-month and 2nd year B.Ed. students

Value for 2023-24: $985.00

Established through donations from family and friends to commemorate the life of an excellent student who graduated with a BA Honours History in 1970.  At the time of her death in May 1988, she was involved in a successful executive career.  The scholarship is awarded annually to a second year Bachelor of Education student who shows exceptional promise as a classroom teacher.

No application is required.

Eligible to apply: 1st year B.Ed. students

One student entering the Bachelor of Education program.  Preference is given to women.  The recipients are to be superior students with a broad range of interests in people and human relations.  The education student must be an Acadia graduate.  Mrs. Seaman died tragically in January 1989, having served family, friends and her community in exemplary ways as a parent, youth supporter, school board member and businesswoman.

Two awarded for 2023-24: $1391.67    Application Form

Established in 2019 through a generous gift from the Estate of Donald Hall, the Donald and Evelyn Hall Scholar-Bursaries are awarded annually to continuing full-time students, two in the Education program and one in the History program, in recognition of academic achievement and financial need. Student receiving an award are eligible for consideration in subsequent years of their program.

Eligible to apply: 16-month, 1st year, and 2nd year B.Ed. students

Value for 2023-24: $500.00    Application Form

Awarded to a mature student enrolled in a Bachelor of Education who has had some work and life experience, moving toward a second career, the Margaret Aylward Legacy Award recognizes a student who has a strong work ethic and is bravely undertaking a new chapter later in life. Preferably identifying as a woman, this student may be juggling parenting or other caregiving duties, part-time or full-time work, volunteer leadership roles in the community or other extraordinary challenges.

Honoring their mother, Margaret Aylward (’74 & ’79), the family is proudly sharing her accomplishments and personal traits through this award. Margaret raised five children while going to school and working full-time as an educator. Fiercely determined, she took courses over many years at night and in the summer in order to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Bachelor of Education degrees, furthering her expertise and abilities as a teacher.

The Nova Scotia Teachers Union Bursaries in Education are awarded annually, one to a student of Indigenous descent and one to a student of African descent who are currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Education program and who have financial need. The award is on recommendation of the School of Education.

Eligible to apply: 16-month, 1st year, and 2nd year B.Ed. students

Value for 2023-24: $1000.00           Application Form

Established in 2014 by Elizabeth Fillmore Etter (Class of 1951) in honour of her father, Charles L. Fillmore (Class of 1925). To be granted to (an) undergraduate student(s) with demonstrated financial need in the School of Education.

Eligible to apply: 16-month and 2nd year B.Ed. students

Value for 2023-24: $710.00      Application Form

Established by family and friends to honour Dr. Nason (BA Acadia '34; MA '38; DCL '60; B.Paed. Toronto '42; A.I.E. University of London, '50) who devoted his entire life to the progress of education in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.  Awarded annually to a superior second year Bachelor of Education student who has demonstrated qualities of leadership and excellence in teaching and who needs financial support.

Three Scholarships for 2023-24: $669.67 approx. each      Application Form

Awarded annually to students in the second year of the Bachelor of Education degree program who are academically superior and demonstrate excellence in leadership and professional promise.  Selection is made by faculty members of the School of Education.  The scholarships are endowed by (the estate of the late) Dr. McCutcheon (B.Sc (Agr) McGill, '42; B.Sc. Sir George Williams, '43; BA., do., '44;  B.Ed., Acadia, '46; MSA Tor. '48; Ed.D. Cornell '51; D.Ed. Brandon '89; F.C.C.T.).

Value for 2023-24: $2506.00     Application Form

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the School of Education to an entering or returning student in the Bachelor of Education degree program who aspires to a teaching career.  The bursary is awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement.

The bursary is made possible through the generosity of Earle Hawkesworth (B.A. Acadia '44; B.D. '47; B.Ed. '58; Hon D.Ed. '79) and Elsie Hawkesworth (Acadia '50) of Edmonton, Alberta.  Dr. Hawkesworth, former Deputy Minister of Education for the Province of Alberta, and Elsie Hawkesworth were both teachers who served many years in the field of education.

Awarded annually to a student in the School of Education at Acadia University. Preference will be given to students from Nova Scotia.

This scholarship has been established by Mr. Craig's family as a memorial to him. Evan Douglas Craig (BA, BEd, MA, Acadia 1947, 1948, 1949) received many honours for his leadership on both the varsity football and hockey teams. He was inducted into Acadia's Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995. He devoted his career to the education of young Nova Scotians with enthusiasm for the nurturing of young minds and respect for all.

Eligible to apply: 16-month, 1st year, and 2nd year B.Ed. students

Value for 2023-24: $2420.00           Application Form

Established in 2013 through the Estate of Horace and Emma Morton '68. To be awarded to a full-time student studying in a Bachelor of Education program who demonstrates financial need. Emma Parker was born in 1913 and grew up in Medford, Nova Scotia. She began teaching as a teenager and met Horace Morton whom she married in 1940. Emma taught all over Kings and Hants counties and traveled the world before concluding her career as librarian at the vocational school in Kentville.
